Competing against 30 teams from across the region, the team demonstrated outstanding engineering skill, teamwork and determination. What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is the level of competition they faced. Many of the other teams represented University Technical Colleges (UTCs), where students study engineering at A-level and dedicate significantly more curriculum time to technical projects. Despite this, our Year 11 pupils rose to the challenge and proved they can compete with the very best.

A Full Day of Competition and Challenge

The regional finals were far more than just a race. Throughout the day, the team was assessed across a wide range of demanding categories designed to test both technical excellence and professional skills.

In addition to achieving one of the fastest track times of the event, pupils:

  • Delivered a formal verbal presentation to a panel of judges

  • Took part in professional-style interviews about their design and engineering process

  • Showcased their pit display, explaining branding and team identity

  • Completed detailed car scrutineering, where judges examined the technical precision and compliance of their vehicle

  • Presented their enterprise and sponsorship strategies, demonstrating business awareness and financial planning.

The event required resilience, confidence and composure under pressure. From early preparation to final race times, it was a full-on experience that pushed the team to perform at their very best.

Just Missing Nationals — But A Huge Achievement

Only the top two teams from the regional finals progress to the National Finals, meaning Bradfield narrowly missed out on advancing further this year. While there is understandable disappointment, the overwhelming feeling is one of pride.

To place 5th out of 30 teams — and to do so against older students with more specialised study time — is a truly outstanding accomplishment. The team has represented Bradfield Secondary School with professionalism, ambition and excellence.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Their success highlights the strength of STEM education at Bradfield and the opportunities available to pupils who are willing to innovate, collaborate and challenge themselves. Experiences like this develop far more than engineering skills — they build confidence, communication, project management and real-world problem-solving abilities.

The Year 11 STEM Racing Team should be immensely proud of everything they have achieved. They have set a high benchmark for future teams and inspired younger pupils to get involved in STEM competitions.

Congratulations to the entire team — your school is incredibly proud of you.
